How CIF Works

When a contract is quoted as "CIF [Destination Port]" (e.g., CIF New York or CIF Rotterdam), the costs and responsibilities are allocated as follows:

The Seller's Obligations:

• Procurement & Export: Handling all costs to get the goods to the origin port and clearing them for export.
• Main Carriage: Booking and paying for the ocean freight to the named destination port.
• Insurance: Obtaining and paying for a marine insurance policy to protect the cargo against loss or damage during the voyage.

The Buyer's Obligations:

• Risk Transfer: A critical point to remember—although the seller pays for the freight, the legal risk transfers to the buyer the moment the goods are loaded onto the vessel at the origin.
• Import Formalities: Once the ship arrives at the destination port, the buyer is responsible for unloading, import customs clearance, duties, and inland transport to their final location.

CIF vs. FOB: A Simple Comparison

Many new importers choose CIF because the seller handles the logistics. However, experienced buyers often prefer FOB (Free On Board) for better control.

• CIF (Cost, Insurance, and Freight): The seller controls the shipping. This is convenient but may involve hidden markups in freight costs or higher arrival fees.
• FOB (Free On Board): The buyer controls the shipping by choosing their own freight forwarder, which often leads to more transparent pricing and better tracking.
