DDP (Delivered Duty Paid)

DDP (Delivered Duty Paid) is an Incoterms® rule under which the seller assumes the maximum level of obligation. The seller is responsible for delivering the goods to a named place in the destination country, clearing them for import, paying all duties and taxes, and ensuring the cargo is ready for the buyer to unload. In essence, the seller handles all logistics, customs, and costs until the goods reach the agreed-upon destination, making it the most "hands-off" option for the buyer.
Responsibilities: Who Does What?
To visualize the division of labor between you and your supplier, refer to this breakdown:
| Responsibility | Seller (Exporter) | Buyer (Importer) |
|---|---|---|
| Export Clearance | ✅ | ❌ |
| Main Carriage | ✅ | ❌ |
| Import Clearance | ✅ | ❌ |
| Duties & Taxes | ✅ | ❌ |
| Unloading at Destination | ❌ | ✅ |
| Risk Transfer | At delivery to destination | After unloading |
When Should You Use DDP?
DDP is often the preferred choice for specific scenarios:
- Sample Shipments: When you need a quick prototype without dealing with local customs bureaucracy.
- Small Orders: If you lack an Import-of-Record (IOR) number or experience with local customs, DDP simplifies the process significantly.
- Convenience: When you want a clear, "landed cost" upfront and prefer the supplier to manage the complexities of transit and import compliance.
Essential Considerations
While DDP is convenient for the buyer, there are two sides to the coin:
- Cost: Because the seller bears all the risks and expenses, the product price will typically be higher to account for potential duties, taxes, and service fees.
- Control: If the seller is unfamiliar with your country's import regulations, your shipment is at a higher risk of being stuck in customs. Always verify that your supplier has a reliable logistics partner in your destination country before proceeding.
