EXW (Ex Works)

EXW (Ex Works) is an Incoterms® rule that represents the minimum obligation for the seller. Under EXW, the seller is only responsible for making the goods available at their named premises—such as a factory or warehouse—at a specified time. From that point forward, the buyer assumes all costs, risks, and responsibilities, including loading the goods, export clearance, main carriage, and import formalities at the destination.
Responsibilities: Who Does What?
To understand how EXW shifts the burden entirely to the buyer, refer to this breakdown:
| Responsibility | Seller (Exporter) | Buyer (Importer) |
|---|---|---|
| Export Clearance | ❌ | ✅ |
| Main Carriage | ❌ | ✅ |
| Import Clearance | ❌ | ✅ |
| Duties & Taxes | ❌ | ✅ |
| Loading at Origin | ❌ | ✅ |
| Risk Transfer | At seller's premises | Once goods are available |
When Should You Use EXW?
EXW is rarely the best choice for beginners, but it can be beneficial for specific strategies:
- Total Control: If you have your own freight forwarder and want full visibility over the entire supply chain from the moment the goods are produced.
- Consolidation: If you are buying from multiple suppliers in one country and want to consolidate everything into one container, EXW allows you to manage the pick-up logistics centrally.
- Pricing Transparency: You see the "ex-factory" price clearly, separating the product cost from any potential logistics markups the supplier might add.
Essential Considerations & Warnings
While EXW offers maximum control, it carries significant "hidden" risks:
- Export Licensing: In many countries (including China), if you are not a registered entity in the origin country, you cannot legally perform export clearance. If you buy EXW, you may find yourself unable to legally export the goods without hiring an expensive third-party agent.
- Loading Liability: Under strict EXW rules, the seller is not obligated to load the goods onto your truck. If you arrive and the seller refuses to help, you are responsible for the labor and equipment to get the goods onto the vehicle.
- Hidden Costs: Since the seller is not managing any logistics, they may be less cooperative if your freight forwarder faces delays at the factory.
