Air Freight is the fastest mode of transport in international logistics, involving the carriage of goods by aircraft. While it is significantly more expensive than ocean freight (FCL/LCL), it is the primary choice for high-value, time-sensitive, or perishable cargo.

Types of Air Freight Services

Depending on your budget and urgency, air freight is generally categorized into three service levels:

1. Air Express: Handled by courier giants like DHL, FedEx, or UPS. This is a "door-to-door" service where the courier handles all customs formalities. Best for small parcels under 100kg.
2. Standard Air Freight: Goods are transported by commercial airlines or dedicated cargo planes (e.g., Emirates SkyCargo). This is usually "Airport-to-Airport," and the buyer must arrange local pickup and customs.
3. Charter Service  For massive projects or oversized equipment, an entire aircraft is rented. This is the most expensive and exclusive tier of air logistics.

How Air Freight Cost is Calculated: The "Volumetric Weight"

In air freight, space is as valuable as weight. Airlines use a formula to ensure they are compensated for light but bulky items (like pillows or plastic toys).

• Chargeable Weight: The airline will charge you based on whichever is higher: the Actual Gross Weight or the Volumetric Weight.

Essential Considerations & Warnings

• DG (Dangerous Goods): Air freight has extremely strict rules regarding batteries (especially Lithium), liquids, powders, and magnets. Shipping these requires a MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet) and specialized "UN" packaging.
• The 100kg "Sweet Spot": For shipments under 45kg, Air Express is usually cheaper. For shipments between 100kg and 300kg, Standard Air Freight becomes more cost-effective.
• Chargeable Weight Accuracy: If your supplier provides incorrect dimensions, your final air freight bill could be hundreds of dollars higher than the quote. NewBuyingAgent verifies dimensions at our warehouse before booking to avoid "billing surprises."
• ULD (Unit Load Devices): In air freight, goods are loaded into specialized aluminum containers or onto pallets called ULDs. This ensures the cargo fits the contour of the aircraft's fuselage.
