Canton Fair: A Buyer's Guide

TheCanton Fair, officially known as theChina Import and Export Fair, is China's largest and longest-running trade exhibition. Held twice a year in Guangzhou — a spring session (April–May) and an autumn session (October–November) — it brings tens of thousands of exhibitors and hundreds of thousands of international buyers together under one roof. For buyers sourcing from China, it is often the single biggest opportunity of the year to see products in person, compare suppliers side by side, and negotiate face to face instead of over email.
Launched in 1957 and jointly organized by China's Ministry of Commerce, the Guangdong Provincial Government, and the China Foreign Trade Centre (CFTC), the Canton Fair is often called China's "No.1 Fair." Each session now spans roughly three weeks and is split intothree phases, with each phase dedicated to a different set of product categories so that buyers can focus on the dates relevant to what they actually want to buy.
Why the Canton Fair Matters for Buyers
- Scale and variety: Tens of thousands of exhibitors across nearly every product category, from electronics to furniture to apparel, all in one venue.
- Face-to-face negotiation: You can inspect physical samples, compare materials and craftsmanship on the spot, and negotiate price and terms directly with factory representatives.
- Discovering new suppliers: Many exhibitors are factories that don't actively market themselves on Alibaba or 1688, making the fair a way to find manufacturers you'd otherwise never come across.
- Reading a market at a glance: Walking a full phase gives a fast, hands-on sense of pricing benchmarks, new product trends, and which suppliers are investing in R&D versus simply copying designs.
2026 Session Dates & Phases
Each session runs daily from 9:30 AM to 6:00 PM (including weekends) at the China Import and Export Fair Complex (Pazhou), Haizhu District, Guangzhou.
| Phase | 2026 Autumn Dates | Core Categories |
|---|---|---|
| Phase 1 | Oct 15–19 | Electronics, household appliances, machinery, hardware & tools, vehicles & spare parts, new energy, lighting, building materials |
| Phase 2 | Oct 23–27 | Furniture, home decor, gifts & premiums, kitchenware, ceramics, gardening products, household items |
| Phase 3 | Oct 31–Nov 4 | Apparel, textiles, shoes, bags & luggage, toys, baby & maternity products, personal care & health products, office supplies, food |
The Spring session follows the same three-phase, same-category structure roughly six months earlier (mid-April to early May). If your product spans more than one phase — for example, a brand selling both electronics accessories and apparel — you may need to plan for two separate trips within the same session.
How to Register and Attend
- Apply for an invitation letter.First-time buyers should pre-register on the official Canton Fair website well in advance; this generates the invitation letter typically required to support a Chinese business visa application and saves the on-site registration fee.
- Prepare your documents. You'll generally need your passport, a completed application, company information (a business license or company website helps establish legitimacy), and — for repeat visitors — your previous Canton Fair badge or buyer number.
- Book flights and hotels early.Guangzhou hotel rates spike sharply during each phase, and rooms near the Pazhou complex sell out months ahead for popular dates.
- Bring business cards and a clear product brief.Exhibitors meet hundreds of buyers per day; a card and a one-page summary of what you're sourcing (category, target price, order volume) helps you get taken seriously and followed up with promptly.
- Set up local payment apps before you land.Alipay and WeChat Pay make transport, food, and incidental purchases far easier once you're on the ground.
5 Tips for First-Time Buyers
- Match your dates to the right phase.Walking into the wrong phase means an entire venue of products that have nothing to do with your business — double-check the category table above before booking flights.
- Walk before you talk.On your first day, scan a hall broadly before committing to serious negotiations, so you have a realistic sense of the price and quality range before you start comparing quotes.
- Verify before you commit.A booth at the Canton Fair confirms an exhibitor paid for a booth — it does not confirm factory ownership, production capacity, or export experience. Ask to see the factory's business license, ask whether they manufacture in-house or subcontract, and request references from past export clients.
- Negotiate on total cost, not just unit price.Factor in MOQ, sample costs, tooling fees, and shipping terms (see our guide to Incoterms) before comparing quotes across booths.
- Follow up fast.Exhibitors receive dozens of similar inquiries each week after the fair closes. Sending a clear, specific follow-up email within 48 hours — referencing your booth conversation and any samples discussed — significantly improves your response rate.
Common Pitfalls to Avoid
- Trading companies posing as factories. Some booths are staffed by trading companies or agents rather than the actual manufacturer, which can mean a price markup and less direct control over production. This isn't necessarily a dealbreaker, but you should know which one you're dealing with.
- Sample vs. mass-production gap.The sample shown on the booth may not reflect what a factory can consistently deliver at scale. Always request apre-production sampleand consider a pre-shipment inspection before your first bulk order ships.
- No after-fair support.Once the fair ends, staying on top of sampling, quality control, and shipping from overseas is difficult without someone on the ground in China.
Canton Fair vs. Using a Sourcing Agent
Attending the Canton Fair in person and working with a China-based buying agent aren't mutually exclusive — many experienced buyers do both. The fair is unmatched for discovering new suppliers and product trends firsthand; a sourcing agent is unmatched for what happensafterthe booth conversation: verifying the factory behind the sales pitch, negotiating with the leverage of an established local relationship, and managing quality control and logistics once you're back home.
If you can't attend in person, or want a second set of eyes on a supplier you met at the fair, NewBuyingAgent can verify factories, negotiate on your behalf, and manage the entire production and shipping process from Guangzhou through to your door.
